Voice metrics could be banking key
Voice biometrics could improve internet banking procedures and replace expensive card readers, a developer of the technology has claimed. VeCommerce has suggested voice profiles could be used to authenticate online transactions based on the unique qualities of each person's speech. "Over a quarter of the UK population now regularly uses online banking but fraud continues to increase and criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their attacks," noted general manager, Brett Feldon. Despite an evolving threat from fraud, half of the users recently questioned by consultancy, Accenture, admitted they used the same password for each site they visited. Mr Feldon cited the recent creation of an international voice biometrics standard and the "multifactor authentication of an individual's identity through the unique properties of their voice" as further evidence of the technology's potential.
